I know I'm a bit late in my goodbye, but I felt it important to mention. In case you don't already know, Indie-MP3 has finally closed it's internet doors. I knew Tom and Trev were getting pretty busy with all their LostMusic dealings, but I had always been oblivious to the fact that Indie-MP3 might one day be affected. I owe a great huge debt of gratitude to what they've been doing over there since 2001. It's in large part to Indie-MP3 – and also Roque's old blog Mira El Pendulo (inspired by Indie-MP3) – that I even got into the fantastic and lovely world of Indiepop in the first place, so for that I am forever thankful! Indie-MP3 will be very missed, but I can't wait to see what the guys have got planned in the future!
By the way, can I say that I felt a little sad on reading that the indie mp3 blog is coming to an end. You did an amazing job there and it was always the blog I consulted first to find out about all the great indie stuff that is out there. I used to come home exhausted from another hectic working day and then just lose myself in all these great sounds and honest reviews. I will miss it terribly, but I will look out for your further adventures ...
For five years this was the column where Tom Bartlett and his contributors have been recommending and championing indiepop. Some was good, some was bad. Some I loved, some I thought ‘what are they thinking about’. But this didn’t matter at all. What they did for indiepop is what matters. Their taste became an authority: what they recommended ended up as a snowball, all the other little blogs would follow them. They were trend setters. Pretension wasn’t their flag, their input was real and trustworthy, even if you didn’t like what they recommended. The total opposite that Pitchfork does.
The Lostmusic blog was formed out of the ashes of indie-mp3. We aim to blog about the best music that we find. Lostmusic also puts on pop shows and releases records and CDrs. We come across many great new bands. We like to share what we hear, what we like - be that some noisy oiks or some fragile indiepop. And all that comes in between. We hope you find something you like on our newly launched blog.
There will be the odd intermittent rambling from yours truly here in the future. That blog will also replace Are You Scared To Get Happy which I will pull in the new year and once I remember what my FTP password is! You had better grab what you want why it is still up.
Apologies for the somewhat scary banner. It's work in progress at present.
Indie Pop News has been created to take care of the news in indie pop land that indie mp3 used to post about. This time it is a blog with a difference as the onus is on labels, artists etc to post directly to the blog themselves.
To find out more and to get an account see the about page on the site.
For the time being indie -mp3.co.uk will redirect to that domain name for the next few weeks or so but please update your bookmarks before then. Some images/tracks will disappear (sorry!) as I clear out the files on the old domain but the text (the important bit) will remain.
Oh thanks for all the kind words in the farewell post. It's nice to be appreciated!
An indie pop webzine reviewing albums, gigs and singles as well as seeking out and championing new indie pop bands and labels (2001-2008)
Indie MP3 started out in 2001 which a weekly download from my indie pop collection. There were no other indie pop sites out there (not that I could see anyway). A blog was added in 2003 and the site transformed itself into a fully fledged review site in 2004.
Indie MP3 merged with Lost Music in 2006 which saw gig promotion, club nights and the launch of our own record label. A CDR label is to follow in 2009 alongside our residencies at London's Gramaphone and Enterprise venues. This all means something had to give and indie mp3 folded in December 2008.
There are now more indie pop blogs than you can shake a stick at - see recommended reading for the best of these.
A new review site (without the regular indie pop news updates) will appear here in 2009.
I will still contribute to Sounds XP, Sounds Experience and of course Lost Music. Requests for reviews can still be sent to the existing e-mail and postal addresses.
